Water puppetry, known in Vietnamese as Múa rối nước (literally “puppets dancing on water”), is a captivating form of traditional performance art that originated in the Red River Delta region of northern Vietnam over a thousand years ago, dating back to the 11th century. Unlike other styles of puppetry found across Asia, this unique Vietnamese tradition takes place on a water stage, with wooden puppets skillfully controlled by puppeteers standing behind a screen using long bamboo rods hidden beneath the water's surface. Over the centuries, water puppetry has evolved but remains a distinctive cultural expression, offering insights into rural life, folklore, and legends of Vietnam.
